Free Will & Choice

I was teaching, lecturing and giving healing sessions in Massachusetts for the last 2 weeks. It gave me a chance to discuss many spiritual topics among which there was one especially ‘tender’: the free will and choice issue.

Some of us believe that we have none or very little influence on our so-called destiny and that free will and choice concept is highly over-rated. That we practically fully depend on other, most prominent people, who make all the decisions, hence we are left in their mercy.

The other side of that equation are those who trust that everything depends on us and that we are ‘almighty’ making all our choices and exercising our free will to the fullest. If someone does not do that, it means he is undeveloped and must understand the depth of individual possibilities.

I do not know what you think about it and – firstly – if it is a topic of your divagations with yourself. Most of us have seemingly too small amount of time on hands to get philosophical about life. Choices? Yes, we make them when we are trying to balance our expenses etc. But I think that the problem is deeper and a lot more complicated.

The most recognized philosophers throughout time were pondering and researching the issue of free will and choice. From Aristotle through Seneca to Leibnitz they all touched the problem. Are we free? To what degree our choices are truly ours? What or who decides where the borderline is placed?

Let’s think – we have pre-destined conditions, which will regulate what we can experience in this life. For example if I have been born of white skin, I cannot even begin to imagine what an individual of black skin must go through in the area where Apartheid rule. Being a woman, I cannot experience a male way of thinking and – finally – being short I have no idea how it is to be tall.

On the other hand – times have changed, the world became smaller and smaller, so it became possible to experience life on other continent. I was born in Europe, but made a choice to move to North America and stay here to experience and taste life here. I also travel throughout the world teaching and every time I ask myself the same question: would I like to live here permanently? My choice – up to now – always has been “NO, my place is in North America”. But – who knows what will happen in the future?

We also make choices if we want to get more (or less) education, how will we behave and process specific events mentally or emotionally. We seem to have influence on many things.

Our choices and the degree of will are limited in some aspects, but it gives us still a lot of opportunities to exercise freedom of thinking, experiencing, feeling and choosing. Is that enough though? I think we must say that it must be enough for now. We must remember that as long as we are bonded with our physical body, our freedom of making choices and decisions on specific fields will always be limited.

Our spiritual development will allow us to raise our vibrations and experience more, hence make more free choices. Until one day…
