In Persian and Islamic mythology, the Peri are spirits who have been denied access to paradise until they have done penance. Having been expelled from paradise, and trying to regain entrance by giving the gift that is most dear to heaven. After three attempts,eventually the Peri is admitted back into heaven, by giving an angel the gift most dear to God, "A warm Tear from a repentant sinner's cheek" the tear of an evil old man who repented upon seeing a child praying in the ruins of the Temple of the Sun at Balbec.
